16-Year-Old Arrested in Bronx Shooting That Killed Another 16-Year-Old
A 16-year-old boy was apprehended and charged with murder nearly six weeks after a tragic incident in which another teen was fatally shot in the head while allegedly playing with a firearm inside a Bronx residence. The arrest was made on Monday following a series of investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of John Nunez.
Authorities identified the suspect, whose name has not been released, and charged him with murder, manslaughter, and criminal possession of a weapon. The incident unfolded on the morning of August 10, when Nunez, along with two other teenagers, was in a bedroom on Prospect Avenue near East 169th Street handling what they believed to be an unloaded pistol.
According to police reports, prior to the shooting, one of the teens questioned Nunez about the presence of ammunition in the chamber. Nunez reportedly responded negatively. Subsequently, the same teen removed the magazine from the pistol, aimed it at Nunez, and discharged the weapon. The incident occurred around 5:10 a.m., resulting in Nunez suffering a fatal gunshot wound. Initially, officials characterized the event as a tragic accident.
Following the shooting, the teenager who pulled the trigger fled the scene. While police interrogated another participant, an 18-year-old male friend, he was ultimately not charged with any crimes. The suspect absconded with the firearm but left behind the magazine, along with a shell casing that was later recovered by investigators at the scene.
Reports indicate that the teenage suspect has a history of legal troubles, having been arrested five times prior for various offenses, including burglary and robbery.
