18-Year-Old Arrested in Shooting Incident at UNM That Resulted in Death of 14-Year-Old Boy
An 18-year-old individual has been apprehended following a tragic shooting incident at a University of New Mexico (UNM) dormitory that resulted in the death of a 14-year-old boy and left a 19-year-old man injured. According to authorities, the shooting occurred early Friday morning at the Casas del Rio housing complex, a privately managed dormitory located in central Albuquerque.
The incident reportedly began around 1:30 a.m. when UNM police responded to an alarm at the adjacent Mesa Vista Hall. Upon arrival, officers discovered broken windows and indications of blood at the scene. During a search of nearby buildings, they located the deceased boy inside a room at Casas del Rio. Shortly thereafter, a 19-year-old male sought medical attention at UNM hospital, claiming he had been shot on campus.
New Mexico State Police assumed oversight of the investigation shortly before 4 a.m. Initial investigations revealed that four individuals were reportedly involved in a casual gathering in the dorm when, for reasons yet to be determined, the suspect opened fire. Following the gunfire, three individuals managed to escape the room while the shooter remained.
Authorities utilized license plate reader technology to track down the suspect, identified as Joen Fuentes, who was arrested without incident during a routine traffic stop in Valencia County around 2:30 p.m. Fuentes is facing serious charges, including first-degree murder, aggravated assault, aggravated battery, and tampering with evidence.
As the investigation continues, law enforcement officials are working to ascertain the connections between the suspect and the victims. State Police Chief W. Troy Weisler emphasized that part of the inquiry involves uncovering the circumstances that led to the shooting, including the activities of the individuals immediately prior to the incident.
In response to the shooting, the campus implemented a shelter-in-place order, which was lifted later in the afternoon of the same day. By Saturday, the university confirmed that operations had fully resumed, allowing for all planned activities to take place as scheduled.

The shooting has raised concerns about safety in campus housing, prompting discussions about preventive measures.
