25-Year-Old Woman Killed in Head-On Collision on Highway in Hudson Valley

A tragic vehicle collision on a Hudson Valley highway resulted in the death of a 25-year-old woman from Middletown, New York. The incident, which took place on State Route 209 in the town of Hurley, occurred around 5:30 p.m. on Monday, according to a statement released by state police.

The victim, Sierra Fatima Koren Thornton, was a passenger in a 2019 Mercedes-Benz driven by 47-year-old Hawanatu I. Deen-Ayers. Initial investigations indicate that Deen-Ayers was attempting to overtake another vehicle while traveling southbound when she crossed over the broken yellow centerline, entering the northbound lane. This maneuver led to a head-on collision with a 2021 Ford pickup truck driven by 60-year-old David W. Lincoln, a resident of Accord, New York.

In an effort to avoid the impending collision, Lincoln swerved his vehicle onto the eastern shoulder of the highway. However, Deen-Ayers also veered onto the shoulder, resulting in the Mercedes-Benz striking the Ford pickup truck head-on.

Both Deen-Ayers and Lincoln, along with a 63-year-old woman who was a passenger in the Ford, managed to exit their respective vehicles and were subsequently transported to Benedictine Hospital. Fortunately, their injuries were reported to be non-life-threatening.

Tragically, Koren Thornton was trapped inside the Mercedes-Benz and required emergency personnel to extricate her from the vehicle. She was then transported to Kingston HealthAlliance Hospital, where she was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

State police have confirmed that their investigation is ongoing, and as of the latest report on Tuesday morning, no charges had been filed in connection with the crash. Local authorities are appealing to the public for any additional information that may aid their investigation.
