25-year-old woman raped and beaten in Queens cemetery; suspect has been arrested following the hours-long attack.
A 25-year-old woman was the victim of a violent sexual assault outside a cemetery in Queens, New York, and a 31-year-old man has now been charged in connection with the incident. According to law enforcement sources, the assault occurred on the evening of May 30, 2023, as the woman was making her way to work near Union Field Cemetery, located on Cyprus Avenue close to Vermont Place.
At approximately 9 p.m., the suspect approached the victim and threatened her, forcing her into compliance. During the course of the attack, the perpetrator physically assaulted the victim, delivering multiple punches and kicks while she was held against her will. Although the victim was unable to provide a precise account of the attack’s duration, police believe it lasted for several hours.
Following the incident, the victim was transported to Brookdale Hospital, where medical staff treated her for injuries consistent with sexual assault. In the days that followed the assault, authorities arrested Oscar Vallejo, the suspect, who has been charged with several offenses, including rape, kidnapping, sex abuse, and assault.
Vallejo is reported to have an extensive criminal history, with six prior arrests connected to sexual offenses. These include multiple previous charges of attempted rape, sexual abuse, and forcible touching. Notably, on July 7, 2023, he was apprehended after allegedly attacking a 21-year-old woman in Brooklyn, just over a mile away from where the recent assault took place. The earlier incident involved Vallejo following the victim on a scooter, where he threatened her and attempted to remove her clothing. Fortunately, the young woman managed to escape and report the attack.
In a bid to solicit information from the public, police released Vallejo’s mugshot, urging any additional victims who may have encountered the suspect to come forward. The NYPD has made resources available for those affected, with victims encouraged to contact the Sex Crimes Hotline at (212) 267-7273 or reach out to Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS. These efforts aim to enhance safety and encourage reporting among potential victims in the community while reinforcing the commitment to bring justice to survivors of sexual assault.
