Seven individuals, including a retired detective and a corrections officer, have been charged in a New Jersey drug bust.
In a significant crackdown on narcotics trafficking in New Jersey, authorities arrested seven individuals, including a retired detective, a corrections officer, and a police dispatcher. This operation, described as one of the most extensive narcotics investigations in recent months, was conducted by the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Narcotics Task Force and Internal Affairs Unit over a six-month period.
Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced on Monday that the investigation culminated in the seizure of over 4 kilograms (approximately 9 pounds) of suspected cocaine, two handguns, seven vehicles, and more than ,000 in cash. The estimated street value of the confiscated cocaine exceeds 0,000. In addition to these impressive seizures, officials discovered what has been characterized as a “narcotics production facility,” further highlighting the scope of the operation.
The arrests took place in the early hours of July 17 at various locations across North Bergen, West New York, and Union City. Leading the alleged narcotics network is Alfredo Diaz, a 50-year-old resident of Union City, who faces multiple charges related to his activities within the syndicate.
Among the law enforcement personnel arrested were Ileana Hernandez, 56, a dispatcher for the West New York Police Department; Marquis Santiago, 33, a Hudson County Corrections officer; and Thomas Mannion, a 60-year-old retired detective from West New York. Hernandez is facing serious charges including official misconduct, conspiracy to commit official misconduct, and conspiracy to distribute cocaine. Santiago’s charges include conspiracy to possess cocaine, while Mannion faces accusations of conspiracy to distribute cocaine.
The other individuals arrested in this operation include Edwin Martinez, 39, from North Bergen; Daniel Diaz, 28, from West New York; and Cristian Cortez, 55, from Englewood. These individuals are charged with offenses that include possession with intent to distribute cocaine, conspiracy, money laundering, and various weapons-related crimes.
This operation underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking and organized crime within the region. As investigations continue, authorities remain vigilant in their pursuit of those who finance and facilitate the illegal drug trade.
