Wildfire in Turkiye claims lives of 10 firefighters and rescue workers during severe heat wave.

In the wake of a devastating wildfire that has occurred in northwestern Turkiye, authorities have confirmed that at least ten firefighters and rescue workers tragically lost their lives while valiantly combating the blaze in Eskisehir province. This incident adds to the series of wildfires that have afflicted central and western regions of Turkiye amid soaring temperatures.
Turkish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Ibrahim Yumakli, reported that the fatalities included five forestry workers and five rescuers. These individuals were among a group of 24 firefighters who became trapped when shifting winds exacerbated the fire, resulting in catastrophic conditions. Minister Yumakli indicated that despite their swift transfer to medical facilities, ten of the trapped firefighters succumbed to their injuries, while 14 others remain under medical care.
In a reflective statement, Yumakli expressed the profound loss felt by the nation: “Unfortunately, we have lost five forest workers and five rescuers.” The local community is grappling with grief, as local lawmaker Nebi Hatipoglu articulated his sentiments through social media, indicating the deep sorrow felt across the region.
The wildfire, spurred by high temperatures and strong winds, has threatened residential areas and led to the evacuation of several villages. Minister Yumakli cautioned that extreme weather conditions are projected to persist, with expectations of extraordinary heat and unpredictable winds. This has prompted an urgent call to the nation’s 86 million citizens to remain vigilant and exercise caution in the days ahead.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan paid tribute to the brave individuals who lost their lives while performing their duties, stating, “I pray for God’s mercy on our brothers and sisters who fought at the cost of their lives to protect our forests. I extend my condolences to their families and our nation.”
Furthermore, the Turkish justice minister announced that two prosecutors have been assigned to conduct an investigation into the circumstances of this tragic incident. This year alone, wildfires have taken a heavy toll on the nation, with a total of 13 reported fatalities to date, including earlier losses in the Izmir province.
As Turkiye strives to address these environmental challenges, the commitment of its firefighters and forest workers continues to shine as a testament to their bravery and dedication to protecting the nation’s natural heritage.
