Three individuals are missing following a major explosion and fire at a Nebraska plant.

Three individuals are currently unaccounted for in eastern Nebraska following a significant explosion that occurred Tuesday afternoon at a wood pellet manufacturing facility. The incident took place around noon at the Horizon Biofuels plant located in Fremont, approximately 40 miles northwest of Omaha. This facility specializes in the production of animal bedding and wood pellets intended for use in smokers.

Local authorities have confirmed that three employees were present inside the plant at the time of the explosion. Fremont Mayor Joey Spellerberg indicated that emergency responders faced substantial challenges in conducting a search for the missing individuals due to the intensity of the fire and the dangerous conditions resulting from the blast. Fire crews have been engaged in firefighting efforts, which have prevented them from accessing the site for search and rescue operations.

Fremont Fire Chief Todd Bernt reported that the explosion generated “heavy smoke and a lot of flames,” which significantly hindered rescue efforts. Initial attempts to gain access to the facility were thwarted by the collapse of structural elements, including mangled steel, preventing first responders from entering the building. Images captured after the explosion depicted extensive damage, including the near-total destruction of the plant’s flue tower and widespread debris scattered in the surrounding area.

As of 4 p.m. local time, the fire continued to blaze, with Chief Bernt suggesting that it could smolder for several days before it is fully extinguished. In response to the emergency, local law enforcement agencies have established a security perimeter around the site, restricting access within a three-mile radius. Additionally, Nebraska Task Force One, an urban search and rescue team, has been deployed to assist in the ongoing emergency response.

The cause of the explosion remains undetermined and is currently under investigation by local authorities and safety agencies. The situation continues to evolve as first responders work diligently to manage the aftermath of this catastrophic event. As developments unfold, updates will be provided to keep the public informed about the rescue efforts and findings related to the explosion.
