Gaza Aid Distribution Labeled As Intentional Killing by Humanitarian Organization

In a poignant call to action, Doctors Without Borders, known by its French acronym MSF, has urged for the immediate cessation of Israel’s militarized food distribution scheme in Gaza. The organization characterized this initiative as a form of “institutionalized starvation and dehumanization” in a recent report entitled “This is not aid. This is orchestrated killing,” which sheds light on the dire humanitarian crisis in the region.

The report, released this Thursday, details the experiences of MSF in its clinics located in Rafah, southern Gaza. These facilities have become critical hubs for treating patients who have suffered injuries at two GHF aid distribution sites, which are reportedly controlled by the Israeli military and private contractors from the U.S. Since their inauguration in May, these sites have unfortunately become known for chaotic encounters that include stampedes, suffocating crowd surges, and incidents of violence aimed at controlling crowds.

MSF expressed serious concerns, stating that these distribution sites fall profoundly short of the recognized standards required for safe and dignified humanitarian aid distribution. They emphasized that such levels of violence, seen surrounding an aid distribution point, would be unacceptable in any other part of the world where MSF operates, including the most violent conflict zones.

Over a span of just seven weeks, between June and July, MSF’s primary care clinics have witnessed a disturbing influx of casualties. A staggering 1,380 individuals were treated and 28 fatalities recorded in their facilities located in the al-Attar and al-Mawasi areas, adjacent to the GHF sites. Among the patients were 174 individuals suffering from gunshot wounds, with a notable number being women and children, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of violence faced by civilians in search of essential resources.

The report further indicated that many patients arriving from GHF sites in Khan Younis exhibited gunshot wounds that suggested deliberate targeting rather than random crossfire. Additionally, injuries were reported from crowd control tactics involving pepper spray and other forms of physical assault.

Disturbingly, many of those injured arrived at the clinics coated in dust and sand, remnants of their attempts to shield themselves from gunfire while lying on the ground. MSF’s narrative underscores a heartbreaking reality; civilians have become the unwitting victims of violence in pursuit of life-sustaining aid. The organization’s coordinator poignantly noted that those seeking basic necessities, such as flour or pasta, are left to question the grave risks associated with their pursuit of food.

As this humanitarian crisis continues to unfold, the call for substantial structural changes to the aid distribution process in Gaza becomes increasingly urgent. The well-being of countless civilians hangs in the balance, emphasizing the critical need for an immediate and compassionate response to alleviate their suffering.
