NYPD adds 500 officers to Dominican Day Parade in response to last year’s violence.
The National Dominican Day Parade will implement significant changes this year, emphasizing safety and security in response to incidents from the previous event. The parade is scheduled to commence two hours earlier at 11 a.m., rather than the customary 1 p.m., and the route has been shortened. This year, the parade will proceed along Fifth Avenue from West 38th Street to West 55th Street, covering a reduced span compared to past iterations.
In an effort to enhance public safety, the New York Police Department (NYPD) has assigned 957 uniformed officers to the event, which is an increase of 500 officers compared to last year. This decision follows a troubling incident during the previous parade, during which a 65-year-old man was slashed across the face by a 20-year-old participant, resulting in an early end to the celebrations. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch acknowledged that the staffing levels had been inadequate last year and affirmed that correcting this issue is a priority for the NYPD.
Chief Joseph Gulotta stated that the 957 officers on duty will not include those from additional units, such as K-9 teams or personnel monitoring the event through drone surveillance. He expressed confidence that this marked increase in officer presence will significantly improve safety throughout the festivities.
The Dominican Day Parade, now in its 43rd year, has historically attracted approximately 500,000 spectators, celebrating Dominican heritage and culture in New York City. However, last year’s parade was marred by violence, prompting authorities to take a more cautious approach this time. The stabbing incident not only raised concerns about immediate safety but also led to an escalation, with some participants reportedly breaching barricades and overwhelming the designated routes.
In light of these changes and the increased police presence, officials remain hopeful that the 2024 parade will proceed smoothly, allowing attendees to enjoy the cultural celebration without the specter of violence overshadowing the event.
As anticipation builds for this year’s demonstration of Dominican pride, authorities urge participants and spectators alike to adhere to safety protocols and cooperate with law enforcement to ensure a successful and secure celebration.
