Javier Milei Forms Organization to Strengthen Relations Between Israel and Latin America

President Javier Milei of Argentina has unveiled a significant initiative aimed at bolstering relations between Latin America and Israel, coinciding with the anticipated visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The initiative entails a million donation that Milei plans to utilize for launching a nonprofit organization titled the American Friends of the Isaac Accords (AFOIA), following his recognition as the latest recipient of the Genesis Prize—an award honoring notable contributions from the Jewish community.
The Genesis Prize Foundation, which recognizes exemplary individuals within the Jewish diaspora, lauded Milei’s plans to leverage his prize funds to advocate for a closer alignment with Israel, promote counter-antisemitism measures, and espouse shared democratic values among Latin America’s leaders. Co-founder Stan Polovets emphasized the importance of the new nonprofit as a means to foster unity against ideologies perceived as threats to global freedoms.
The establishment of AFOIA is seen as a continuation of initiatives launched during the Trump administration, which sought to normalize relations between Israel and Arab nations. Notably, the Abraham Accords facilitated the opening of diplomatic channels between Israel and several countries, including the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. This effort aligns with Milei’s vision to create a similar diplomatic environment between Israel and key Latin American nations.
Despite criticisms surrounding Israel’s military engagements, particularly regarding recent conflicts in Gaza, Milei’s approach advocates for strengthening partnerships, especially with countries like Uruguay, Panama, and Costa Rica, which are viewed as well-positioned for enhanced cooperation with Israel. Notably, anticipation surrounds the potential for AFOIA’s objectives to include Brazil, Colombia, and Chile by 2026.
Danny Danon, Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, commended Milei’s endeavors, underscoring the importance of standing firm in support of Israel amidst regional challenges. Many Latin American leaders have voiced strong opposition to military actions in Gaza; nonetheless, Milei distinguishes himself as a proponent of Israel’s policies. This includes his commitment to relocating Argentina’s embassy to Jerusalem, reflecting a trend among leaders to affirm relations with Israel amid complex geopolitical landscapes.
Milei’s staunch support for Israel has prompted a mixed response domestically, with significant public demonstrations organized by various groups opposing his stance and advocating for Palestinian rights. Protests have gained traction, particularly in light of the expected visit from Netanyahu, calling into question Argentina’s diplomatic commitments amid international scrutiny regarding allegations of war crimes against Israeli officials.
As the landscape of Latin American diplomacy evolves, President Milei’s initiative signals a proactive approach aimed at renewing and strengthening ties with Israel, while navigating the intricate dynamics that define both domestic public opinion and regional relations.
