Tennessee car crash results in charges against five leaders of a Mexican cartel.

Five leaders of the United Cartels, a prominent drug trafficking organization based in Michoacan, Mexico, have been charged with a series of crimes related to drug trafficking, according to an announcement from the federal government. The Justice Department has offered rewards totaling up to million for information that may facilitate their apprehension.

The investigation into these individuals originated from a seemingly unrelated incident—a car crash in the small town of Rockwood, Tennessee, which occurred in 2019. This incident prompted federal agents to trace the movements of money and drugs back to the upper echelons of the United Cartels, a group implicated in a long-standing conspiracy to transport significant quantities of methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl into the United States.

The individuals charged include Juan Jose Farias Alvarez, known as “El Abuelo,” alleged to be the head of the United Cartels; Alfonso Fernandez Magallon, referred to as “Poncho”; Luis Enrique Barragan Chavez, or “Wicho”; Edgar Orozco Cabadas, called “El Kamoni”; and Nicolas Sierra Santana, nicknamed “El Gordo.” These figures are said to be integral to the cartel’s sustained efforts to infiltrate and expand its reach within the U.S. drug market.

The investigation’s pivotal moment came when two low-level cartel operatives crashed their vehicle in Tennessee while attempting to dispose of a cache of methamphetamine. Following their arrests, law enforcement officials were able to connect these individuals to Eladio Mendoza, a cartel leader operating from Atlanta. In 2020, federal agents executed a seizure of 850 kilograms of methamphetamine from a tractor-trailer at Mendoza’s property, further tightening the noose around the operations of United Cartels.

The developments surrounding Mendoza took a grim turn when he was reportedly murdered in Mexico, allegedly under orders from fellow cartel members, following the loss of their drugs to federal authorities. This incident underscores the violent repercussions often faced by those involved in the drug trade and highlights the extensive networks that constitute the current narcotics landscape.
