Off-duty NYPD officer fatally shoots man who brandishes a gun in Manhattan.

In a late-night incident in Washington Heights, an off-duty New York Police Department (NYPD) officer fatally shot a 30-year-old man who allegedly threatened him with a firearm. Authorities reported that the confrontation occurred at approximately 9:45 PM on Sunday evening, when the officer was approached by two men on mopeds near the intersection of West 173rd Street and Amsterdam Avenue.

According to NYPD officials, the situation escalated quickly when one of the individuals dismounted his moped and inquired if the officer was familiar with a particular person. Following this query, he displayed a gun. NYPD Deputy Chief Eric Pagan elaborated on the sequence of events, stating that upon observing the weapon, the off-duty officer responded by drawing his own firearm and discharging multiple rounds, striking the assailant. The second individual on the moped fled the scene following the exchange of gunfire.

The suspect, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was transported to Harlem Hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. Police reported the recovery of a firearm from the scene, which is standard protocol in investigations involving gunfire.

This incident marks the third shooting involving NYPD officers within a span of less than a week, highlighting a concerning trend of increased violence. Just days prior, on Friday night, a separate confrontation led to the death of Jesse Campbell, a 44-year-old man, in what is being investigated as a possible suicide-by-cop situation. In that instance, Campbell allegedly wielded a fake pistol outside a diner in Staten Island, prompting off-duty officers to open fire when he refused to comply with their orders to drop the weapon.

Additionally, earlier in the week, an on-duty officer shot and injured a 22-year-old man in Flatbush, who was engaged in gunfire with a rival. The suspect, identified as Edynesson Bauduy, was apprehended after being shot and now faces federal gun charges.

These incidents reflect a troubling pattern of armed confrontations involving police and civilians, raising questions about public safety and the challenges law enforcement faces in high-tension interactions. The investigations are ongoing as authorities work to gather further details surrounding each incident.
