Sacred Heart Academy opens new preschool to address growing early childhood education needs.
In response to the increasing demand for early childhood education, Sacred Heart Academy in Bryn Mawr is set to launch its Little Lions program this fall. This initiative aims to accommodate twenty-four preschool-aged children on the Main Line, filling a significant gap in local educational offerings.
The inception of the Little Lions program was inspired by feedback from alumni during a school event. Kim Trinacria, the interim associate head of school, noted that many parents, upon attending the “Tiny Hearts Toddler Time” play event, expressed a strong desire for quality preschool education options in the community. This response highlighted a clear need for enhanced early learning resources, particularly as Sacred Heart’s previous preschool operation ended in 2016.
Despite substantial research underpinning the benefits of high-quality preschool programs in preparing children for future educational and life success, options remain limited in the Philadelphia area. The financial burden of childcare, coupled with the decreasing availability of affordable preschool programs, has been a challenge for many families. As of March 2024, the average cost of childcare for one child in the Philadelphia region stood at 1 per month, surpassing the average price of renting a home at ,885 per month. Additionally, the average salary for pre-kindergarten teachers in Pennsylvania was reported at ,430, significantly lower than that of kindergarten teachers, indicating systemic issues in the early childhood education sector that impact recruitment and retention.
Rooted in the Catholic educational tradition, Sacred Heart’s Little Lions program emphasizes cooperation, kindness, and play as foundational elements of a successful early learning experience. The preschool, which welcomes both boys and girls ages 3 and 4, offers part-time and full-time enrollment options, with tuition fees set at ,000 for a three-day program and ,000 for a five-day schedule. Class sizes will be capped at twelve students to ensure personalized attention from educators.
The curriculum for Little Lions aims to foster academic, social, emotional, and creative development through engaging hands-on activities. The importance of play in children’s learning is a central theme, with research illustrating that playtime enhances cognitive development and supports healthy relationships.
While formal religious instruction is not on the agenda for these young learners, the values of kindness and community will be integrated into the program’s activities, setting a foundation for moral and ethical development.
To facilitate enrollment, the academy has initiated tours of the preschool and will conduct open house events during the fall and winter months, further showcasing this promising new offering in the community. The Little Lions program represents a significant step toward addressing the critical need for quality early childhood education in the Bryn Mawr area.
