As summer transitions into fall, Philadelphia’s vibrant pop music scene continues to flourish, offering a plethora of musical events for concertgoers to enjoy. This week, the concert calendar in the Philadelphia area is packed with performances both indoors and outdoors, featuring a diverse lineup of artists. Among the highlights are Haim, Leon Bridges, Charley Crockett, and the dynamic duo Sting and Shaggy, all scheduled to perform at the Mann Center.
The pop rock trio Haim, composed of sisters Danielle, Este, and Alana Haim, kicks off a tour in support of their fourth album, “I Quit,” on Thursday night at the Mann, buoyed by the success of their catchy single “Relationships.” Though originally hailing from Los Angeles, the Haim sisters have familial ties to the Philadelphia area, as their mother was raised in Northeast Philadelphia.
The concert scene on Thursday will also be marked by Rilo Kiley’s performance at the Met Philly. This beloved indie rock band, led by Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett, marks its return after a 17-year hiatus, with their reunion tour kicking off over Labor Day weekend in Asbury Park. Concurrently, Canadian singer-songwriter Mac DeMarco will entertain audiences at Franklin Music Hall, showcasing his latest album “Guitar,” his first collection of lyrical songs in seven years.
Thursday evenings will also see performances by indie artist Frankie Cosmos at Underground Arts, emo band Oso Oso at First Unitarian Church, and jazz-saxophonist Karl Denson at Ardmore Music Hall. Experimental rock group Swans will be captivating fans at Union Transfer, making it a rich evening filled with musical options.
The following day, Friday, welcomes esteemed Irish poet and musician Paul Muldoon to Ardmore Music Hall, where he will perform with his band, Rogue Oliphant. In Montgomery County, singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith is set to take the stage at Bryn Mawr Twilight Concerts, while British folk-rock legend Al Stewart celebrates his 80th birthday at the Keswick Theatre.
Highlighting Saturday’s events, the Mann Center will host the second iteration of the “One Fine Day” festival featuring Sting, Shaggy, and guest performances from O.A.R., Marcia Griffiths, and Big Freedia. Meanwhile, Haverford Township Music Festival will present free performances, including zydeco musician Buckwheat Zydeco Jr.
The following week promises to be equally exciting with an array of shows, including Sparks at the Keswick Theatre, the Pogues launching a tour, and the celebration of Elvis Costello’s iconic album “Rum, Sodomy & the Lash” at Franklin Music Hall. Concertgoers will have to make tough decisions, including choosing between Pulp, performing at the Met Philly, and the Waterboys, gracing the Keswick Theatre, presenting a fine array of options for music lovers in the Philadelphia area.
With an impressive lineup of artists, this week highlights Philadelphia’s status as a thriving hub for live music, ensuring that residents and visitors alike have much to look forward to in the days ahead.
