VietLead raises 0,000 to address financial crisis facing the grassroots organization.
VietLead, a grassroots advocacy organization dedicated to serving Southeast Asian communities, has successfully raised 0,000 in a span of less than two months, marking a significant step toward alleviating its financial difficulties. This substantial influx of funds places the organization halfway toward its year-end fundraising goal of 0,000, which is essential for ensuring its long-term sustainability.
Earlier this year, VietLead announced severe budget cuts, which included layoffs of 70% of its staff, indicating an anticipated reduction in its annual budget from approximately .6 million to around 0,000 in the following year. Despite the ongoing challenges associated with these adjustments, the recent fundraising efforts have been fruitful, thanks to increased contributions from larger funding sources such as the Samuel S. Fels Fund, as well as support from numerous individual donors.
The organization’s leadership expressed optimism about the future, with expectations for continued financial support through planned fundraising events this fall. These initiatives will include additional screenings of “Taking Root,” a documentary series highlighting the experiences of Vietnamese, Cambodian, and Laotian refugees who resettled in Philadelphia after the Vietnam War, which marked its 50th anniversary this year. This historic event prompted an unprecedented refugee crisis, resulting in the exodus of approximately three million individuals from Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia.
Following the war’s conclusion on April 30, 1975, around 125,000 Vietnamese people were evacuated to the United States, many of whom settled in South Philadelphia, where they faced the challenges of forging new lives in an unfamiliar environment. Currently, Philadelphia is home to roughly 123,000 Asian Americans, including around 15,000 Vietnamese.
Established in 2016, VietLead has been at the forefront of addressing the needs of Southeast Asian communities in Philadelphia and South Jersey, providing crucial services such as food assistance, medical care, youth empowerment, and civic engagement. The organization has actively participated in significant Asian social justice movements.
With new funding from various foundations and contributions totaling approximately ,545 since the beginning of the year, VietLead plans to engage in an organizational evaluation to ensure a more focused and sustainable operation. The organization acknowledges the financial management decisions that contributed to its previous instability and is now committed to strategic planning for the future.
VietLead is grateful for the overwhelming support from the community, which it sees as its greatest asset during this challenging transitional period. The group remains hopeful that ongoing and future fundraising campaigns will further solidify its operations and enhance its capacity to serve the community effectively. The contributions received thus far reflect the commitment and solidarity of individuals and businesses within the community, reaffirming the importance of collective action in the face of adversity.
