Charlie Kirk’s last debate partner speaks out following fatal shooting incident.

On September 10, 2025, a tragic incident unfolded at Utah Valley University (UVU) during an event featuring prominent conservative figure Charlie Kirk, when he was shot and killed while engaging with a student. The unsettling event transpired just moments after Kirk had answered a question posed by mathematics student Hunter Kozak regarding mass shootings and their alleged connection to the transgender community.

Kozak, who has gained recognition as a liberal influencer on platforms like TikTok, attended Kirk’s American Comeback Tour with the intent to confront him on their differing viewpoints. Before the shooting, Kozak inquired about the number of transgender individuals implicated in mass shootings over the past decade. Kirk’s response, met with applause from the audience, was vague yet pointed. Kozak clarified that the total number of mass shooters identifying as transgender over the last ten years was just five, before transitioning to a broader question regarding the total number of mass shooters in the United States during the same period.

Kirk’s answer shifted the conversation’s focus towards the complexities of defining such statistics, particularly how gang violence figures into the overall count. Within mere moments of this interaction, Kirk was fatally shot in the neck by an assailant positioned on the roof of the Losee Center, a considerable distance from the event’s location.

The shooting left Kozak grappling with profound regret over the question he posed, which he later characterized as poorly timed given the escalation of events. In subsequent statements, he conveyed his sorrow for Kirk’s family, expressing a shared commitment to freedom of speech, albeit from sharply opposing ideological perspectives.

Authorities have since apprehended 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in connection with the shooting, charging him with multiple offenses, including aggravated murder and felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury. The incident has sparked discussions on campus and beyond about political discourse, public safety, and the tragic consequences of violence.

Kirk, who co-founded the conservative organization Turning Point USA and was an ally of former President Donald Trump, was participating in the inaugural event of a 15-stop campus tour, designed to foster debate among students. The impact of his death resonates deeply, leaving many to reflect on the polarized climate of contemporary political discussions and the imperative to uphold civility amid contentious discourse. The loss of Kirk, a figure whose influence reached many young conservatives, serves as a somber reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by public figures in today’s socio-political landscape.
