Mercedes driver dies in Brooklyn crash; motorist who ran red light arrested for manslaughter.

In a tragic incident in Brooklyn, a 31-year-old man identified as Arturo Alberto Baez Cordero was killed when his Mercedes-Benz was struck by a Honda Odyssey that ran a red light. The crash occurred at approximately 6:25 PM on Sunday, in the Gowanus neighborhood at the intersection of 9th Street and Second Avenue.

Reports from local law enforcement indicate that Baez Cordero was heading east on 9th Street when the Odyssey, driven by 38-year-old Alexey Isanov, collided with his vehicle while speeding north on Second Avenue. Following the initial collision, both cars slammed into a Dodge pickup truck that was stopped at the traffic light. The impact was severe enough to cause the Mercedes to catch fire, necessitating a response from emergency services who had to extricate Baez Cordero from the wreckage.

Paramedics transported Baez Cordero to Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead approximately thirty minutes after the accident. This unfortunate event underscores the dangers associated with traffic violations, specifically speeding and running red lights, which continue to pose significant risks on urban roads.

In addition to Baez Cordero’s tragic death, the collision resulted in multiple injuries. A 37-year-old passenger in the Honda was hospitalized in critical condition, while another passenger, a 64-year-old relative, sustained less severe injuries. The driver of the Dodge pickup truck, a 49-year-old man, also suffered injuries but is reportedly on the mend.

Isanov was arrested at the scene of the accident and has since been charged with manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, and reckless endangerment. He was also taken to the hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries.

Investigators revealed that the Honda Odyssey had a concerning history, with 15 speeding tickets and six red light violations recorded, although it is unclear whether Isanov was driving during those incidents. This incident serves as a somber reminder of the persistent issues of traffic safety and the need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws to prevent such devastating accidents in the future.
