Three SEPTA incidents result in two fatalities and multiple injuries.
A series of tragic incidents involving SEPTA trains and trolleys has resulted in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to ten others in the Philadelphia area. These events unfolded within a 12-hour period, significantly disrupting commuter travel in the region.
The first incident occurred late Wednesday night, around 11:30 p.m. on the Media/Wawa Line. A train struck a person in the track area located between the Morton and Secane Stations. The individual was pronounced dead at the scene, prompting a response from SEPTA officials. In order to facilitate the transport of remaining passengers to Center City, a shuttle bus service was implemented. By Thursday morning, train services on this line had resumed operations.
The following morning, at approximately 7:00 a.m., another SEPPA-related incident transpired when overhead wires fell onto a D1 trolley, formerly known as Route 101, near the Scenic Road Station. The impact of the fallen wires resulted in injuries to the operator and all ten passengers on board. Authorities reported that three of these passengers were subsequently transported to Lankenau Hospital for further medical evaluation. On the morning of the incident, shuttle bus services commenced between Woodland Avenue and Drexel Hill Junction Stations to accommodate affected commuters.
In a separate incident on Thursday morning, around 8:00 a.m., an inbound Manayunk/Norristown Line train struck a person at the Schoolhouse Lane grade crossing, which is situated between East Falls and Wissahickon Stations. The Philadelphia Police Department confirmed that the individual sustained life-threatening injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after 8:39 a.m. following transport to Temple University Hospital. In light of this tragedy, SEPTA directed shuttle buses to transport approximately 300 passengers to Center City. Service on the Manayunk/Norristown Line has been suspended indefinitely.
