A 50-year-old man from Hackensack remains in custody following a violent incident that occurred over the weekend, which involved the attempted strangulation of a victim and culminated in a standoff with law enforcement. Kevin M. Lovett was taken into custody on Saturday evening after police responded to a 911 call at approximately 8:40 p.m., reporting that he had choked someone and brandished a knife.

Upon arrival, officers found the victim outside Lovett’s apartment with a minor cut to her neck. Despite her injuries, she declined medical treatment and guided the police to Lovett’s residence. The situation escalated when Lovett barricaded himself inside the apartment, reportedly armed with a gun and accompanied by a 6-year-old child. Fortunately, the child was unharmed throughout the tense standoff.

Due to Lovett’s refusal to cooperate and the potential threat posed by the reported firearm, the Bergen County Regional SWAT team was deployed to the scene. Law enforcement officials executed an entry into the apartment, successfully rescuing the child and apprehending Lovett without further incident. Following the resolution of the standoff, authorities discovered two unregistered firearms: a loaded Taurus 9mm and an unloaded A.A. Arms AP9. Additionally, a collection of high-capacity magazines and ammunition was seized during the operation.

Lovett now faces multiple charges, including aggravated assault by strangulation, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, child abuse, and two counts of unlawful possession of a weapon. He is currently being held at the Bergen County Jail awaiting further legal proceedings.

Hackensack Police Detective Captain Darrin DeWitt commended the collaborative efforts of the responding agencies, emphasizing that their quick response was crucial in preventing further injury during this distressing incident.
