60 million pounds of corn dogs recalled due to wood fragments found in the batter.

The Hillshire Brands Company has initiated a substantial recall of approximately 58 million pounds of corn dog and “sausage on a stick” products, following concerns that the items may contain foreign objects, specifically wood fragments, embedded in their batter. The announcement was made on Saturday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).

The recall affects products that were packaged between March 17 and the date of the announcement. Among the specific items involved are State Fair Corn Dogs on a Stick and Jimmy Dean Pancakes & Sausage on a Stick. The recall was classified as a voluntary action taken by the company in response to identified hazards associated with the products.

According to Tyson Foods, the parent company of Hillshire Brands, the extraneous wooden pieces were discovered during routine evaluations and inspections triggered by multiple consumer complaints, which included reports of five unspecified injuries. The company determined that the wooden sticks became inadvertently incorporated into the batter during the production process.

Regulators have indicated that these potentially unsafe products were sold through various channels, including online platforms, and were distributed to retailers, vendors, schools, and Department of Defense facilities throughout the United States. FSIS officials have urged consumers and institutions that may have purchased Hillshire Brands’ corn dogs and sausage products to thoroughly check their inventories for any affected items.

The recall highlights an ongoing commitment to consumer safety and food quality. The FSIS has reiterated the importance of vigilance in monitoring food products stored in both commercial and domestic refrigeration and freezer environments.

Tyson Foods, which also produces other well-known brands including Ball Park, Sara Lee, and Bosco’s, emphasized that only products associated with the Hillshire recall were under scrutiny, asserting that the other brands remain unaffected.

As this recall unfolds, wary consumers are encouraged to remain informed and to act promptly to check for the affected products in their kitchens and storage areas, ensuring their safety and well-being. For more details on the recall and how to identify potentially contaminated products, consumers can refer to announcements from the FSIS and the Hillshire Brands Company.
