Man acquitted of murder charges in the killing of a casino winner in New Jersey.
A Pennsylvania man has been acquitted of various charges, including murder, pertaining to the fatal shooting of a New Jersey pharmaceutical executive following a significant gambling win at a Pennsylvania casino. Jekai Reid-John, 27, from Norristown, was cleared of murder, armed robbery, burglary, multiple weapons offenses, and witness tampering after a three-week trial in Middlesex County. However, the jury was split on a final count of conspiracy to commit robbery, compelling them to reconvene on October 10 to deliberate further on that issue, as reported by Media News Source.
The incident in question involves the shooting death of 54-year-old Sree Aravapalli on October 26, 2021. That evening, Aravapalli was discovered in his Plainsboro Township residence with multiple gunshot wounds. He was subsequently rushed to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries hours later.
According to law enforcement, surveillance footage from the Parx Casino in Bensalem captured Reid-John in the vicinity of Aravapalli prior to the shooting. Investigators noted that Aravapalli had just cashed in a substantial ,000 payout before beginning his journey home. EZ Pass records indicated that he utilized the Pennsylvania Turnpike, where he was reportedly followed by a white BMW featuring a temporary Delaware license plate, customized wheels, and a black spoiler. Court documents reveal that the BMW exited the Turnpike just moments after Aravapalli’s vehicle.
Approximately 20 minutes after Aravapalli arrived home, authorities received a 911 call reporting gunfire at the location, leading to the discovery of the victim.
In connection with the case, a second individual, 26-year-old Devon Melchor, has also faced charges, including armed robbery and conspiracy to commit robbery linked to Aravapalli’s death. Melchor was apprehended in Florida in 2021 while attempting to board an international flight. He subsequently entered a guilty plea as part of a deal with prosecutors, though he has yet to be sentenced.
