Disabled woman discovered in garbage shed in upstate New York.

An investigation by New York State Police has led to the arrest of a 75-year-old woman from Hastings, New York, on multiple felony charges after authorities discovered an adult with disabilities in a severely distressing condition. Maria Y. Traub was apprehended on charges of endangering the welfare of a physically disabled person and reckless endangerment, according to police reports.

The situation unfolded after a 911 call prompted law enforcement to conduct a welfare check at a residence located on the 1300 block of U.S. Route 11 in the Town of Hastings, Oswego County. The caller, reportedly a health care provider, expressed significant concern for the well-being of a 46-year-old nonverbal woman who had been overlooked in terms of medication and necessary care.

Upon arrival at the scene, state troopers discovered the victim confined within a shed used for garbage storage, where conditions were reportedly dire, with temperatures exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Officials noted that the woman was dressed in soiled clothing and was unable to sit up or drink independently. Evidence indicated she lacked access to clean water and adequate temperature control and had been using a bucket as a toilet.

The condition of the victim was alarming; she was found to be severely dehydrated, unable to walk, and suffering from multiple broken bones. Following the discovery, she was transported to a nearby hospital for immediate medical attention and remained hospitalized for several days. Subsequently, she was placed under the care of a court-appointed guardian.

While authorities have not disclosed the specifics of Traub’s relationship with the victim, Oswego County District Attorney Anthony DiMartino confirmed that Traub held guardianship over the woman. After her arraignment in the Oswego County CAP Court, Traub was released on her own recognizance.

This incident highlights critical issues regarding the protection and care of vulnerable individuals, especially those with disabilities, and raises questions about oversight and accountability in guardianship situations. The community and authorities are left grappling with the disturbing revelations of this case as the investigation continues.
