Philadelphia Film Society announces renovation plans for its main theater on Chestnut Street.
The Philadelphia Film Society (PFS) recently showcased the completion of a .6 million renovation at its flagship theater located at 1412 Chestnut Street. This transformative project coincides with the impending 2025 Philadelphia Film Festival, reflecting PFS’s commitment to enriching the cinematic experience within the community.
The renovation encompassed a revitalization of the lobby and concession area, introducing a more expansive and inviting atmosphere. Key enhancements include the addition of double doors, a new box office facing the street, and an ADA-compliant entrance. In a move to improve accessibility, the previously circular wheelchair ramp has been removed, effectively increasing the available lobby space.
The impetus for the renovation was underscored by the organization’s leadership. PFS CEO J. Andrew Greenblatt emphasized the goal of creating a brighter, more open environment to foster a sense of community that film can promote. This improvement aligns with their ongoing efforts to adapt and update their facilities for increased patron engagement.
To fund this renovation, PFS initiated a campaign at the end of last year, with an ambitious target of million for various capital needs. They successfully raised .6 million through a combination of state grants, private donations, and support from foundations like the Wyncote Foundation. This achievement speaks to the organization’s robust community backing and the importance of the arts in Philadelphia.
The organization is not stopping here, as additional renovations are planned. These include a comprehensive update of the basement bathrooms and hallways, the construction of a million roof deck theater, and an investment of .2 million to upgrade the East and Bourse theaters. The proposed roof deck theater aims to accommodate 175 patrons and provide a unique cinematic experience against the urban backdrop of Philadelphia.
In 2024, PFS recorded a surge in attendance, with approximately 206,000 filmgoers visiting its three theaters—an increase from 155,000 in 2023. The organization also achieved a milestone with its membership, reaching 4,000 members, a significant rise from the previous year’s 2,770.
Looking ahead, the 2025 Philadelphia Film Festival is set to commence on October 16, featuring a screening of “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery,” attended by director Rian Johnson. The festival will also present an array of anticipated works from distinguished filmmakers like Chloé Zhao and Guillermo del Toro.
