Philadelphia Flower Show 2023 Focuses on Gardening History as Its Central Theme

As Philadelphia gears up for its Semiquincentennial celebration next summer, the 2026 Philadelphia Flower Show promises to highlight the rich history of plants and gardening culture in the United States. The event, which takes place annually at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, has announced its theme for this year: “Rooted: Origins of American Gardening.” This marks the third installment in a trilogy exploring the evolution of gardening themes over the past three years.

The 2024 Flower Show embraced contemporary gardening communities with the theme “United by Flowers,” while last year’s event showcased visions for future landscapes under the theme “Gardens of Tomorrow.” The upcoming show aims to delve into the nostalgia and heritage traditions that have shaped plant cultivation and community gatherings throughout American history.

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS), which has organized the flower show for decades, emphasized the celebration of personal narratives tied to each plant and garden. It highlighted the significance of heritage in shaping how individuals engage with gardening, signaling a departure from merely aesthetic practices to a deep-rooted cultural appreciation. The event is especially notable as it approaches its 200th anniversary in 2027, indicating a longstanding tradition that continues to evolve and attract significant public interest.

The Flower Show traditionally draws thousands of visitors to Center City, with attendees ranging from gardening enthusiasts to families seeking educational activities. The event is designed not just to be visually spectacular but to engage visitors through various interactive experiences. This year’s show will feature a special exhibit focusing on America’s impact on global gardening practices, as well as competitions for houseplants and indoor plants, providing a platform for both amateur and seasoned horticulturists.

Running from February 28 to March 8, 2026, the show will include an immersive entrance garden, reflecting historical influences on gardening styles and aesthetics. In addition to these displays, the event will host a variety of gardening and craft workshops, activities for children, and a bustling marketplace where visitors can purchase flower-related products from numerous vendors.

The Flower Show serves as the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s primary fundraising initiative, supporting greening efforts across Philadelphia. With its combination of historical exploration, engaging activities, and community connection, the event continues to be a cornerstone of Philadelphia’s cultural fabric.

Tickets for the 2026 Flower Show are currently available for purchase through the official PHS ticketing website. For further details regarding the event, interested individuals are encouraged to visit the PHS’s official Flower Show webpage.
