Gymnastics authority responds to Indonesia’s ban on Israeli team participation in world championships.

Indonesia has taken a decisive stance ahead of the upcoming world championships in gymnastics by denying visas to Israeli athletes. This decision, reflecting the nation’s commitment to supporting Palestinian rights, has sparked various reactions within international sports communities.

The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) responded to Indonesia’s announcement with a muted acknowledgment, emphasizing the complexities faced by the host country in organizing the event. The FIG noted, “The FIG takes note of the Indonesian government’s decision not to issue visas to the Israeli delegation registered for the 53rd FIG Artistic Gymnastics, which will be held in Jakarta from October 19 to 25. It recognizes the challenges that the host country has faced in organizing this event.” While the federation’s statement displayed no indication of revoking the event’s hosting rights, it expressed hope for an environment conducive to safe and peaceful participation for athletes globally.

This decision to deny entry to the Israeli team came amid significant public opposition within Indonesia, which is recognized as the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation and as a steadfast supporter of Palestine. Indonesia’s commitment to this cause has long been reflected in its policies, including a longstanding refusal to host Israeli sports delegations at major athletic events.

The Israeli team, which includes prominent athletes such as 2020 Olympic gold medallist Artem Dolgopyat, was previously assured access by Indonesian officials. However, these assurances appear to have contradicted Indonesia’s established policy, creating uncertainty surrounding Israel’s participation in one of the sport’s key competitions.

Yusril Ihza Mahendra, Indonesia’s senior minister of law, reiterated the government’s position by confirming that the Israeli team would not be permitted entry, despite a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. Raja Sapta Oktohari, president of the Indonesian Olympic Committee, supported the decision, underscoring the importance of adhering to government policies based on various considerations.

The gymnastics dispute is emblematic of a broader global response to humanitarian concerns surrounding the conflict in Gaza, extending beyond politics into the domains of sports and culture. This year, Indonesia lost its hosting rights for the Under-20 FIFA World Cup, following political disputes regarding Israel’s involvement. However, in a gesture demonstrating mutual respect and camaraderie, FIFA later awarded Indonesia the hosting rights for a different youth World Cup, thereby valuing Indonesia’s sports legacy and regional influence.

As the world looks on, Indonesia continues to navigate complex geopolitical waters, symbolizing a strong commitment to social justice while hosting international events, encapsulating its role both as a leader in the region and as a proponent of peaceful coexistence.
