Gladwyne Market to close following million sale of its building.
Gladwyne Market, a cherished grocery store located in Lower Merion, has announced its closure following a recent property acquisition. The building, situated at 359 Righters Mill Road, was purchased by RMR Property Holdings for million this past April. An adjacent parcel at 358 Righters Mill Road was acquired shortly thereafter for .25 million.
Pete Liccio, the owner of Gladwyne Market, confirmed that the new proprietors plan to utilize the space for purposes other than grocery retail, insisting that the market vacate the premises. Despite efforts to sustain operations, Liccio noted the inevitability of the closure.
Andre Golsorkhi, the founder and CEO of Haldon House, which is behind the development of these properties, indicated that there are currently no intentions to introduce residential or chain establishments to the site. Instead, Haldon House aims to create a community hub that respects historical architecture and mirrors the unique character of Gladwyne.
Golsorkhi also mentioned a commitment to engage with long-standing local tenants to creatively adapt their spaces while ensuring their continued existence in the village. The newly acquired properties, including 358 Righters Mill Road, which houses a cafe operated by Chef Henry Morgan, will remain open for business despite the changes in ownership. Morgan expressed positive communication with the new owners and excitement about their visionary plans for the area.
Michael Daly, president of the Gladwyne Civic Association, noted that the new owners reached out promptly to discuss their plans with the community. Residents have expressed curiosity and concerns regarding the future use of the properties, emphasizing the value of the village’s historic buildings and local enterprises. Daly articulated hope that the new development would preserve the village’s character while fostering a thoughtful approach to any future renovations.
Gladwyne Market’s employees will transition to positions at the Market of Lafayette Hill, one of the other businesses owned by the Liccio family. The Liccios, who acquired the Gladwyne Market in 2009, faced the challenge of revitalizing the market at that time due to its previous owners’ financial struggles. Since then, the market has become an integral part of the community, with residents lauding its outstanding prepared foods and delivery services that once predated modern delivery platforms.
As the area undergoes change, community members have taken to social media to voice their nostalgia and lament the departure of the market they deemed an institution.
