20 gang members in the Bronx indicted for involvement in multiple shootings.
In a significant law enforcement operation, nearly two dozen alleged members of the notorious 800 YGs gang have been indicted in connection with a series of violent incidents in the Bronx. At a press conference held on Thursday, officials detailed the gang’s involvement in fourteen separate shootings, which included a homicide and multiple other incidents where shots were fired without causing injury.
The 800 YGs gang, which has reportedly maintained a reign of terror in the Crotona section of the Bronx, has been linked to an alarming rise in gun violence in the area. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting that these violent acts were committed with a “total disregard for human life.” Of particular concern were two daylight shootings: one in which bullets were fired at a city bus while passengers were exiting, and another incident that endangered a family on a sidewalk, illustrating the indiscriminate nature of the gang’s activities.
Out of the twenty individuals indicted, seventeen are currently in custody, while law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing the remaining three. This investigation, which spanned two and a half years, was initiated by the NYPD’s gun violence suppression division, a specialized unit that employs advanced surveillance technologies to track and apprehend individuals involved in criminal activities.
Commissioner Tisch highlighted the effectiveness of the department’s efforts, indicating that nearly half of the known gang members were taken off the streets as a result of the investigation. She cautioned against calls from certain city council members to abolish the use of such surveillance tools, arguing that these instruments are essential in combatting the rise of gang-related violence.
The Bronx has experienced a significant increase in shootings recently, accounting for 63% of all shootings citywide. Tisch attributed this surge to gang activity, particularly highlighting the involvement of groups such as the Trinitarios.
