A 49-year-old man was apprehended on Monday at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, following an alarming tip from his family regarding a potential shooting plot. Billy Joe Cagle was found near the airport entrance after his relatives in Cartersville, Georgia, reported that he intended to carry out a violent act within the terminal. Local police, responding swiftly, took action after receiving the report at approximately 9:30 AM.
The family had expressed their concerns to authorities earlier that morning, sharing that Cagle was driving towards the airport with the intention of perpetrating a shooting. Cartersville police acted decisively, notifying Atlanta city officials within minutes and providing a description of Cagle and the vehicle he was using. By 9:54 AM, law enforcement officials had located and arrested Cagle inside the bustling airport.
Upon his arrest, an assault-style rifle was discovered in Cagle’s pickup truck along with 27 rounds of ammunition. Atlanta Police Chief Daniel Schierbaum indicated that the weapon’s presence suggested an imminent risk, stating that he believed Cagle was poised to use it in the crowded terminal. The prompt actions of Cagle’s family played a crucial role in preventing what could have been a catastrophic event.
Cagle now faces multiple charges, including making terrorist threats, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, criminal attempt to commit aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. His previous criminal record includes a felony conviction for marijuana possession with intent to distribute, which dates back to 1999.
One of Cagle’s relatives, his brother Scott Nelson, noted that Cagle had been struggling with mental health issues, including hallucinations when he does not take his medication. Nelson expressed shock over his brother’s actions, emphasizing that Cagle has never harmed anyone in the past.
