Newark man sentenced to 60 years in prison for the murder of his stepfather.

A New Jersey man has been sentenced to 60 years in prison for the fatal shooting of his stepfather, a verdict announced by authorities on Tuesday. Tyrone Cradle, a 29-year-old resident of Newark, was convicted earlier in the year and, according to New Jersey law, is mandated to serve a minimum of 51 years behind bars.

The tragic incident occurred on May 19, 2023, outside the home of the victim, 48-year-old Rasool Crews. Reports indicate that Cradle opened fire on both Crews and Crews’ daughter as they exited their vehicle after returning home. Surveillance footage captured the shooting, showing Cradle emerging from the side of the house just moments before the gunfire erupted.

Following the shooting, Cradle fled the crime scene. However, law enforcement officials apprehended him four days later. The circumstances leading up to the shooting are notable; investigators revealed that two days prior to the incident, Crews had expelled Cradle from his residence, which he had been occupying.

Essex County Assistant Prosecutor Daniel Nicholas, who oversaw the prosecution of the case, characterized the act as a “cold and calculated murder.” Following the conviction in August, Nicholas expressed gratitude towards the jury for their decision and conveyed hopes that justice would help the family and loved ones of Crews to find some measure of closure.

In addition to this serious conviction, public records indicate that Cradle has a previous criminal history. A man sharing his name, age, and hometown was identified in a 2022 federal indictment as a member of the Grape Street Crips gang. This previous indictment included charges related to the distribution of fentanyl and cocaine, and Cradle reportedly pleaded guilty in that drug case.

The shooting has raised concerns regarding gun violence and domestic disputes, notably in urban areas. The conviction underscores the broader issues of violence within families and communities, as well as the consequences of gang affiliations that can compound individual tragedies.
