Listeria outbreak linked to prepared pasta meals results in 6 deaths and 25 hospitalizations.

A listeria outbreak linked to pre-cooked pasta meals sold at major retailers, including Trader Joe’s, has resulted in the deaths of six individuals and led to the hospitalization of 25 others across 18 states. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported that the outbreak, involving cases in states such as California, Illinois, Florida, and Washington, is associated with prepared pasta meals from Nate’s Fine Foods, which were previously recalled due to safety concerns.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is actively collaborating with the CDC and state health agencies to ascertain whether the affected individuals consumed the recalled products. They are also investigating the possibility that additional foods may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria responsible for the outbreak. Consumers are advised to thoroughly check their refrigerators and freezers for any recalled items.

Listeria, a pathogen commonly found in water, soil, and animal feces, poses significant health risks, particularly to vulnerable populations, including adults aged 65 and over, immunocompromised individuals, and pregnant women. The CDC confirmed that among those affected by this outbreak was a pregnant woman, resulting in fetal loss, underlining the severe implications of listeria infections.

The CDC acknowledged that the actual number of cases could be higher than reported, as many individuals may recover without seeking medical attention or undergoing testing for listeria. The initial food recalls, which commenced in June, affected numerous products, including various pasta salads and ready-to-eat meals, such as scampi linguini bowls and trays of alfredo and meatballs marinara. In addition to Trader Joe’s, the contaminated products were also available at notable grocery chains like Walmart, Kroger, Albertsons, Sprouts Farmers Market, and Giant Eagle.

Specific products that have been recalled include Trader Joe’s Cajun Style Blackened Chicken Breast Fettuccine Alfredo and smoked mozzarella pasta salads from Sprouts Farmers Market and Giant Eagle. Additionally, Walmart’s Marketside Linguine with Beef Meatballs and Marinara was also removed from store shelves following the outbreak.

Nate’s Fine Foods, based in Roseville, California, has stated that it does not sell affected products directly to retail stores. The company is cooperating with the FDA and its customers to determine whether further recalls are necessary. In a recent statement, Nate’s Fine Foods emphasized its commitment to maintaining the highest food safety standards and pledged to work diligently with government agencies and state health officials to fully investigate the outbreak.

As health authorities continue to monitor the situation, consumers are urged to remain vigilant regarding recalled food items and to follow any updates from health officials regarding the outbreak.
