Vandalizes three Queens churches with LGBTQ rainbow flag graffiti, labeling them as ‘anti-gay cults.’

A vandal, who was observed riding a CitiBike while carrying a vibrant LGBTQ rainbow flag, is currently being sought by authorities in connection with a series of vandalism incidents targeting three churches within the Far Rockaway neighborhood of Queens. The incidents took place within a swift 20-minute timeframe early on October 5, during which the suspect spray-painted anti-LGBTQ messages on the properties before fleeing the scene.

According to the police, the vandalism spree commenced at approximately 1:40 a.m., starting at the Refuge Church of Christ located on Mott Avenue near Beach 19th Street. The assailant marked the sidewalk outside the church with the message “Anti-gay cult” using black spray paint. Following this, the suspect proceeded to the City of Oasis Church of Deliverance, just half a block away, where additional messages, including “Anti-gay cult” and various LGBTQ symbols, were scrawled on the front door.

The third and final location targeted was St. Mary’s Star of the Sea, situated three blocks away on New Haven Avenue near Beach 20th Street. Here, the vandalism escalated; the suspect darkened the face of a statue of the Virgin Mary and inscribed “Cult” at its base. Furthermore, another statue at this site was defaced, and the words “Welcome cult members” were painted on the sidewalk in front of the church.

The pastor of St. Mary’s Star of the Sea discovered the damage the following morning. Reports indicate that the nearby St. Gertrude’s parish—sharing the same rectory—also experienced vandalism, with plastic bags placed over the heads of statues at both churches.

Authorities have released surveillance footage of the suspect, who wore sunglasses and a rainbow handkerchief covering his nose and mouth during the acts. Police are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the individual.

In a broader context, St. Mary’s Star of the Sea is the sole Catholic church among the vandalized properties, whereas the Refuge Church of Christ is affiliated with the Apostolic denomination and the City of Oasis Church of Deliverance is a Pentecostal congregation.
