Former teacher receives sentence for sexually abusing a student while working in juvenile detention.

A former educator has been sentenced to 14 years in prison following her conviction for sexually abusing a minor at a juvenile detention facility in Kentucky. Elena Bardin, 27, from Columbia, was found guilty in September on multiple charges, including sexual abuse, unlawful transaction with a minor, and distribution of obscene material to a minor. The case was centered around her relationship with a 17-year-old boy who was detained at the Adair County Juvenile Detention Center.

During the trial, Bardin faced an array of serious accusations. Although she was acquitted of soliciting the teenager to murder her husband, the jury found her guilty of the other charges. On the sentencing day, she received consecutive sentences totaling 10 years for the unlawful transaction and four years for the sexual abuse charge, in addition to a 12-month sentence for the distribution charge, which will run concurrently. As a condition of her sentence, Bardin will be required to register as a sex offender for the next 20 years.

The circumstances leading to her arrest began on April 2, 2025, when detention center staff discovered “letters and explicit material” attributed to Bardin that were intended for the incarcerated teenager. Kentucky State Police detectives were informed, which led to an investigation that revealed Bardin had solicited the minor to commit violence against her husband. Evidence also showed that she had engaged in sexual contact with the boy and provided him with sexually explicit images.

Throughout the investigation, authorities uncovered numerous documents detailing Bardin’s illicit communications with the juvenile. These letters contained explicit references to sexual acts and personal sentiments towards the teenager, including admissions that suggested the nature of their relationship went beyond mere words.

At the sentencing hearing, Judge Todd Spalding addressed the severity of Bardin’s actions and noted the overwhelming evidence against her, stating that the material seized included a considerable volume of explicit content, characterized as particularly graphic. The case was further complicated by testimony from Bardin’s supervisor, who revealed that the former teacher had been advised to cease her inappropriate relationship but had instead intensified her engagement with the minor.

This case underscores the critical issues surrounding the safeguarding of vulnerable populations in institutional settings and the responsibilities of educators and staff members in maintaining professional boundaries.
