A poignant incident unfolded in Manhattan on Monday as a 16-year-old girl was rescued from the Harlem River, granting her a second chance at life. The remarkable response of three New York City police officers has drawn attention to both the dangers of self-harm among youth and the heroic actions of first responders.

The unidentified teenager was first seen near the rocky shoreline, close to East 142nd Street and the Harlem River Drive, around 1 p.m. Emergency responders were alerted after witnesses noted her precarious position. As officers dispatched to the scene attempted to approach her, the young girl made the desperate decision to leap into the cold waters of the river, reportedly expressing her inability to swim as she called for help.

Officer Wilmer Guerrero, 32, who quickly jumped into the river after shedding his jacket, bulletproof vest, and gun belt, swam approximately 20 to 30 feet to reach her. Guerrero’s account highlights the urgency of the situation, noting that he feared her struggle could result in drowning or a panic attack. He managed to reach her in time, exemplifying quick thinking under pressure.

Following Guerrero’s swift rescue, Officers Shuaibul Amine and Ankit Gupta, both 27, assisted in pulling the girl to safety. Amine described the girl’s distress as she cried out for help, expressing gratitude for their timely presence. The officers’ combined efforts ensured the girl was brought safely to shore, where they hoped she would receive the support necessary to confront her challenges moving forward.

The temperature of the Harlem River presented an additional challenge, though Guerrero reported that the adrenaline from his rescue efforts initially masked the cold. Upon surfacing, however, he was reminded of the frigid water. The police officers did not have the opportunity to speak with the girl after the rescue; instead, they were advised to warm up while waiting for the Emergency Service Unit and Emergency Medical Services to arrive at the scene.

Reflecting on the incident, Guerrero expressed hope for the young girl’s future and a desire for her to access the needed help and support.
