Two Philadelphia men sentenced to over 20 years in prison for murder of man on his birthday.

Two men involved in the conspiracy to murder Herbert Lyals during his birthday celebration in Bristol Township in July 2016 were sentenced to substantial prison terms in a recent court hearing. John Marquis Wilson, 45, from Frankford, entered a guilty plea to charges including third-degree murder, robbery, and conspiracy. He has been sentenced to serve 16 to 32 years in a Pennsylvania state prison. Wilson played a pivotal role by luring his childhood friend, Lyals, into a fatal confrontation.

George Javon Clark, 34, of West Philadelphia, was sentenced to 20 to 40 years after a Bucks County jury found him guilty of third-degree murder along with related offenses during a trial in July. It was revealed that Clark shot Lyals after Wilson repeatedly contacted him, persuading him to step outside from a birthday gathering hosted by Lyals’ relatives in the Green Lawn neighborhood of Bristol Township.

The motive for the heinous act stemmed from rumors that Lyals, 38, often carried substantial amounts of cash. Despite being convicted, Clark has maintained his innocence, asserting that he did not participate in the design of the plot to murder Lyals.

During Wilson’s testimony against Clark at the latter’s trial, evidence revealed that Lyals had been shot in the chest and head shortly after he left the birthday party to take a phone call. Family members later discovered Lyals outside, gravely injured, with his cell phone lying nearby. Notably, Lyals had several thousand dollars with him at the time of the shooting, undermining the assumption that robbery was the primary motive behind the murder.

Additional testimonies presented during the grand jury investigation suggested that other individuals were aware of the conspiracy to rob Lyals. Witnesses further indicated that a relative of Wilson assisted the accused in escaping back to Philadelphia following the crime. This case underscores a tragic intersection of betrayal and violence, revealing the dangers that can arise from trust misplaced in close relationships.

As the judicial process unfolds, both Wilson and Clark now face decades behind bars as a consequence of their actions that resulted in the untimely death of Herbert Lyals, a man whose life was cut short during what should have been a celebratory occasion.
