SUV hit-and-run on Bruckner Expressway in Bronx results in man’s death.
A tragic incident occurred on a Bronx freeway on Monday night when a Volkswagen driver fatally struck a man in a hit-and-run collision, according to law enforcement reports. The accident took place shortly after 9:30 PM on the Bruckner Expressway, near Morrison Avenue in the Soundview neighborhood. The driver of a 2024 Volkswagen Atlas was traveling in the center lane, heading east, when the vehicle collided with the pedestrian.
The victim, described as a man in his thirties, was violently thrown to the pavement in the right lane, suffering severe trauma to both his head and body. Emergency personnel arrived at the scene but despite their efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the location of the incident. The circumstances surrounding why the man was on the expressway at the time remain unclear.
Following the collision, the driver of the SUV exited the vehicle and fled the scene on foot, leaving the Volkswagen abandoned in the center lane of the expressway. The New York Police Department’s Highway District collision investigation squad has been assigned to investigate the fatal incident, yet as of now, no arrests have been made.
Media News Source has reported that the Volkswagen itself had previously been noted for speeding in a school zone in the Bronx earlier in the year; however, authorities have not confirmed whether the same driver was behind the wheel during both occurrences.
This hit-and-run incident is not isolated. On the same evening, approximately four miles away, another fatality was reported in the Morris Heights neighborhood of the Bronx. A man lying in the roadway was struck by a driver of an unidentified car around 10:40 PM on Grand Concourse and East Burnside Avenue. The driver, similar to the previous incident, did not remain at the scene after the collision, and it remains uncertain whether the motorist was aware of the accident. The victim was transported by emergency medical services to St. Barnabas Hospital, where he also succumbed to his injuries.
The series of events in the Bronx raises concerns about pedestrian safety and underscores the urgency for improved measures to prevent such tragic incidents in the future. Authorities are continuing their investigations and urge anyone with information related to the events to come forward.
