DC National Guard shooter charged with murder following the death of Sarah Beckstrom.

An alleged shooter who was involved in the recent attack on two National Guard members in Washington, D.C., is now facing upgraded charges following the death of one victim. The U.S. Attorney for D.C., Jeanine Pirro, announced this development, indicating that assault charges against the suspect will be elevated to first-degree murder.

The suspect, 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, is accused of executing the shooting on Wednesday afternoon near the Farragut Square metro stop, an area just blocks away from the White House. Armed with a .357 Magnum Smith & Wesson revolver, Lakanwal reportedly ambushed and fired upon U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, and Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, 20. Eyewitness reports state that he opened fire without provocation. Lakanwal was subsequently shot by another National Guard member in an effort to subdue the attack.

Tragically, Beckstrom succumbed to her injuries the following day, which President Trump disclosed during a Thanksgiving call with U.S. troops. He remembered her as a “highly respected, young, magnificent person” and expressed condolences, highlighting her dedication to serving her country. Meanwhile, Wolfe remains in critical condition, with reports indicating that he is “fighting for his life” after sustaining serious injuries.

Both soldiers were part of the West Virginia National Guard, deployed to the capital as part of efforts to enhance security due to rising crime rates in urban areas nationwide. Beckstrom, who began her service in June 2023 after graduating from high school, participated in Operation DC Safe and Beautiful, a program aimed at safeguarding the nation’s capital. The West Virginia National Guard expressed deep sorrow over her loss, underscoring the impact it has had on their community.

Lakanwal, originally from Afghanistan, entered the United States in September 2021 through Operation Allies Welcome, a government initiative designed to resettle Afghan allies who aided U.S. forces during the conflict. He had been residing in Bellingham, Washington, with his family and working as a delivery driver prior to the incident.

Following the deadly shooting, Lakanwal was initially charged with assault with intent to kill while armed, as well as possession of a firearm during a violent crime. However, Pirro emphasized the calculated nature of the attack, calling it “premeditated murder” and characterizing it as an ambush on unsuspecting individuals.

As the investigation progresses, authorities are under pressure to ensure justice is served. Attorney General Pam Bondi has expressed a commitment to pursuing the death penalty, reaffirming the gravity of the charges in a case that has garnered significant attention. The tragic events of this incident serve as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those in uniform and the importance of addressing the underlying issues of violence in communities nationwide.
