82-year-old man dies less than a month after being shoved by his 79-year-old neighbor in Greenwich Village.

An 82-year-old man has succumbed to injuries sustained from an attack involving his neighbor in Manhattan. Dean Conover Whetzel, a resident of Greenwich Village, was assaulted by Dana Escoffier, age 79, on October 11. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on Hudson Street, close to Whetzel’s apartment located on West 10th Street.

Following the altercation, Whetzel was transported to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition, where he remained hospitalized for 25 days before passing away on November 5. Law enforcement officials confirmed that the New York City Medical Examiner has since reclassified Whetzel’s case as a homicide, indicating the serious nature of the incident.

Escoffier, who has pleaded not guilty to assault charges related to the initial attack, expressed disbelief upon learning of Whetzel’s death. He stated that he was unaware of the man’s deteriorated condition and maintained that he did not believe his actions directly led to Whetzel’s death. Although both men resided in the same building, Escoffier claimed they had never met prior to the incident.

Witnesses to the assault have described the scene as shocking. Ethan Dank, a waiter at a nearby restaurant, observed the attack and noted that Whetzel fell to the ground, while Escoffier began to walk away. A crowd quickly formed around Whetzel, with bystanders attempting to assist him. Dank recalled the victim lying on the pavement, appearing conscious but visibly shaken.

Whetzel’s friend, Bifa Secchini, shared her grief over the loss, emphasizing his kind nature and popularity within the community. She noted that Whetzel was accompanied by his black terrier, Buddy, at the time of the attack. In the wake of this tragic incident, plans are being made to return Whetzel’s remains to his home state of Indiana, while Buddy is being looked after by a friend.

As the investigation continues, the case has raised important questions regarding violence and safety within community living environments in urban settings. The ongoing legal proceedings against Escoffier will be closely monitored as authorities assess the implications of this fatal encounter. This event serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability that often accompanies the elderly population in crowded metropolitan areas.
