Green River, Utah Mayor dies in collision with semitruck.

A tragic accident occurred late Friday evening, claiming the life of Green River, Utah’s newly re-elected mayor, Ren Hatt. The 40-year-old mayor was involved in a fatal crash when his vehicle collided head-on with a semitruck on Highway 6, approximately eight miles west of Green River, as reported by the Utah Department of Public Safety.

The incident took place around 9:40 p.m., when a 2021 Freightliner semi traveling west veered into the eastbound lanes, striking Hatt’s 2020 Hyundai Palisade. Authorities indicated that the Freightliner unexpectedly drifted across the double lines, resulting in a significant collision with the front passenger side of Hatt’s vehicle. The impact caused the semitruck to veer back onto the far-right side of the highway, while Hatt’s Hyundai was pushed onto the shoulder of the eastbound lanes, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.

In the aftermath of the incident, law enforcement officials confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing, although there are currently no indications that impairment was a factor in the crash.

Green River, a small town with a population of approximately 1,000 residents, is situated about 140 miles southeast of Provo. The community is recognized as a gateway for tourists exploring Utah’s renowned national and state parks, as well as for its annual Melon Days festival, which attracts many visitors each September.

In a heartfelt statement shared on Facebook, the town of Green River expressed profound sorrow over Hatt’s untimely passing. The post highlighted Hatt’s deep commitment to the community, emphasizing his honesty, kindness, and unwavering dedication during his tenure as mayor.

Hatt’s fiancé, Maria Faye Sykes, also expressed her grief, penning a tribute that underscored the profound love and admiration she had for Hatt. She called for prayers for their families and the multitude who cherished him during his all-too-short life.

A graduate of Case Western Reserve University School of Law in 2014, Hatt was not only serving as mayor but also continued to engage in education, reflecting his passion for teaching and public service. His unexpected death has left a significant impact on the community and all who knew him, marking a tragic end to a promising public servant’s journey.
