Home health aide arrested for injuring 96-year-old woman in Queens while providing care.

A disturbing case has emerged from Lawrence, Long Island, where a 65-year-old Queens woman has been arrested following allegations of elder abuse involving her charge, a 96-year-old woman. Marie Byron, a home health aide, is facing charges of endangering the welfare of an elderly person after video evidence purportedly revealed her mistreatment of the elderly woman.

The investigation commenced when the nighttime caregiver, who took over responsibilities from Byron on a recent Friday evening, observed a fresh wound on the older woman. Concerned by the injuries and reports of pain from the victim, the nighttime aide sought medical evaluation for her charge. Subsequent examinations at a local hospital confirmed the presence of a broken femur, raising serious concerns about the nature of the care being provided.

The situation escalated when the guardian of the elderly victim reviewed surveillance footage from inside the residence. The video depicted the victim’s fall while under Byron’s supervision. Disturbingly, the footage indicated that instead of providing assistance, Byron reacted with impatience, reportedly grabbing the victim’s leg and shaking it aggressively. This shocking behavior allegedly resulted in substantial pain for the vulnerable woman.

Law enforcement officials from the Nassau County Police Department report that Byron failed to call emergency services or seek medical assistance for the victim following the incident. She was apprehended on Sunday and subsequently brought before the Nassau County District Court in Hempstead on Monday, where she was arraigned and conditionally released without bail.

During the proceedings, Byron entered a plea of not guilty, and a protective order was issued to safeguard the elderly victim. The case has raised alarm within the community regarding the care provided to elderly individuals, particularly in home health settings, and the obligations of caregivers to ensure their well-being.

As the legal process unfolds, this case serves as a grim reminder of the vulnerability of elderly individuals and the critical importance of safeguarding their welfare in caregiving situations. Investigations are ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with additional information pertaining to the case or similar incidents to come forward. The safety and dignity of the elderly must remain a paramount concern within society.
