New U.S. Mint coins celebrate the Semiquincentennial, showcasing three landmarks from Philadelphia.
As the United States approaches the milestone of its 250th birthday in 2026, the U.S. Mint has announced a series of newly designed coins, including quarters, dimes, and half-dollars, to celebrate this significant anniversary. The unveiling took place at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia, a city steeped in historical significance and the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence.
The U.S. Mint’s acting director, Kristie McNally, emphasized the importance of these coins, stating that the designs reflect America’s journey towards a more perfect union and celebrate the nation’s foundational ideals of liberty. McNally expressed hope that these commemorative coins would allow Americans to connect with the country’s rich history by literally holding a piece of it in their hands.
These fresh designs showcase various iconic Philadelphia landmarks. Among the new quarter designs are depictions of Independence Hall, the site where the Declaration of Independence was formally adopted, the Liberty Bell—an enduring symbol of freedom maintained by the National Park Service—and an image of a Continental Army soldier representing the pivotal Revolutionary War events at Valley Forge.
The redesigned dime pays homage to the nation’s founding era, featuring Liberty as a woman adorned in a cap inspired by stars and stripes. Notably, the reverse side of the dime will bear an American eagle, a design that harkens back to its earlier circulation in 1796. This marks the first time the eagle has appeared on the dime since 1837.
Additionally, the quarters will honor significant historical moments such as the Mayflower Compact, the Revolutionary War, and other core events including the drafting of the U.S. Constitution and the Gettysburg Address. Images of Presidents James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln are also incorporated into the designs, encapsulating the nation’s legacy.
Meanwhile, the half-dollar coin will symbolize America’s future, showcasing the Statue of Liberty on one side and the imagery of a torch being passed to illustrate continuity and the ongoing American journey.
Production of these coins will occur at the U.S. Mint facilities in Philadelphia and Denver, with circulation expected to begin in 2026. This initiative is part of legislation enacted in 2021 under the Trump administration, which authorized these commemorative coins to be issued for a one-year period starting in January 2026.
The upcoming Semiquincentennial is anticipated to draw a significant influx of visitors to Philadelphia, enhancing the city’s stature as a historical destination. In recent developments, the U.S. Mint has ceased production of pennies in Philadelphia, as the costs of manufacturing have outstripped the coins’ face value, reflecting broader economic trends impacting currency production.
