This year’s creation, weighing in at a staggering 1,000 pounds, is titled “A Toast to Our Nation’s 250th Anniversary: Inspired by Founders. Grown by Farmers.” This theme honors the 250th anniversary of the United States as it reflects on the vital role of agriculture in the nation’s history and prosperity.
The butter sculpture, a favorite among visitors, is typically enclosed in a refrigerated display within the Farm Show Complex, a sprawling 1-million-square-foot venue that accommodates the myriad activities of the event. From livestock shows to live calf births, concerts, and an extensive assortment of food options, the Farm Show offers a diverse experience that attracts thousands each year.
Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding emphasized the sculpture’s significance this year, noting that it symbolizes the foundational contributions of agriculture to the country’s growth over the past quarter-millennium. The display represents a tableau from 1776, depicting historical figures such as Benjamin Franklin and the Founding Fathers as they celebrate the signing of the Declaration of Independence, complete with a milk toast. The creation of the butter sculpture is the work of artists Jim Victor and Marie Pelton, based in Conshohocken. The butter used for the sculptures is typically donated by major national producers, and it is important to note that it cannot be reused for culinary purposes.
