New suspect surrenders in shooting death of Harlem grandmother struck by stray bullet.
A gunman connected to the tragic shooting death of a 61-year-old Harlem grandmother surrendered to police on Monday morning. Ricky Shelby, 23, presented himself at the Manhattan District Attorney’s office accompanied by an attorney before being taken into custody at the 28th Precinct stationhouse. This location is situated near the site of last week’s shooting, which has left the community in mourning.
Shelby is facing serious charges, including murder and attempted murder, following an incident that occurred on the night of April 23, 2025. According to police reports, Shelby opened fire on Lenox Avenue near West 113th Street, striking his intended target, Darious Smith, who sustained a gunshot wound to the foot. A stray bullet, however, tragically hit Excenia Mette, the innocent grandmother, in the head, leading to her untimely death.
Investigators have reported that the altercation began when Smith discharged his weapon, but did not hit anyone. In a swift exchange of gunfire, Shelby retaliated, resulting in Mette being struck. Smith managed to flee the scene using an electric scooter, but police apprehended him a short distance away. He has also been charged with attempted murder.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch commented on the diligent efforts of the department’s detectives in locating and capturing Shelby, emphasizing the need for justice in what she described as a horrific murder. The incident has sparked significant outrage within the community, prompting a vigil attended by members of the National Action Network to honor Mette’s memory.
Excenia Mette was well-known in Harlem, having previously owned Momma Zee’s Food to Plez, recognized as one of New York City’s first women and Black-owned bodegas since 1987. Her involvement in community affairs was profound, and she was a respected figure among local residents.
Mette had been checking on her grandson when she was caught in the line of fire, underscoring the senseless nature of the violence that claimed her life. As the investigation continues, the community grapples with the tragic consequences of gun violence and the loss of one of their cherished members, urging greater action to prevent such incidents in the future.
The evolving situation underscores ongoing discussions about public safety, gun control measures, and the impact of violence on urban communities, highlighting the urgent need for systemic change in addressing these critical issues.
