Man who rushed into Queens fire to rescue mother critically injured with severe burns.
In a tragic incident in Queens, New York, a 22-year-old man is battling for his life after suffering severe burns in a house fire that resulted in the deaths of a mother and her newborn. The fire occurred on Monday night in a subdivided home on Dongan Avenue in Elmhurst, where Thet Aung Oo sustained burns over 99% of his body while attempting to rescue his mother, who had already managed to escape.
Medical professionals have indicated that Oo’s condition is critical, with smoke inhalation exacerbating his injuries and raising concerns about potential heart and kidney failure. His brother, Phyo Ko, stated that the coming days will be crucial for Oo’s recovery, as he is expected to undergo further surgeries and may require extensive ventilation support.
The fire, which was described as fast-moving, not only claimed the lives of 34-year-old Miguelina Alcantara and her newborn daughter, Emma, but also led to significant damage, spreading to a neighboring building and necessitating the emergency response of firefighters. In total, ten occupants, including firefighters who suffered minor injuries, received medical treatment due to the incident.
Subsequent investigations into the cause of the fire remain ongoing, although early indications suggest that it may have originated in the basement of an older building that has previously experienced fire-related issues. Pho Ko expressed frustration regarding the building’s management, citing past incidents that prompted warnings to the landlord which went unaddressed.
According to family members, Phyo Ko and his relatives were residing on the first floor of the building when the fire started. After noticing the smell of smoke, their mother ventured outside to assess the situation. Confusion ensued at the entrance, leading Thet Aung Oo to re-enter the building in search of his mother, ultimately resulting in his life-threatening injuries.
As the family grapples with the devastating consequences of the fire, friends and relatives are rallying support, underscoring the courage exhibited by Oo during the emergency. A GoFundMe page has been established by the fiancée of Oo’s boss, highlighting his selfless actions. The family was in the process of relocating to Florida to start a new jewelry business together when this incident transpired.
The community is expressing its condolences and support for the victims, marking a somber moment as they remember those who lost their lives and rally around the survivor facing immense challenges ahead.
