Qatar’s Customs Chief Confirms Continued Trade Flow Despite Regional Tensions

In an exclusive interview with ZezapTV, Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Jamal, the chairman of Qatar’s General Authority of Customs, reassured the public that the nation is well-prepared to avoid shortages and disruptions despite escalating regional tensions. Al Jamal pointed to a combination of strategic reserves, advanced digital customs infrastructure, and diverse transportation routes as critical components for maintaining trade stability in Qatar.
He asserted that there are currently no significant indicators suggesting concerns over supply chain disturbances. Al Jamal emphasized the role of the General Authority of Customs in continuously monitoring trade flows across various entry points within Qatar, in coordination with relevant governmental agencies. This multi-agency collaboration aims to ensure the smooth movement of goods amid changing regional dynamics, including recent missile threats from Iran, as Qatar’s Ministry of Defence confirmed success in intercepting these missile attacks aimed at the nation.
At the core of Qatar’s customs strategies is the Al Nadeeb platform, an innovative electronic system that streamlines customs clearance and promotes transparency. This digital infrastructure allows stakeholders to efficiently submit the necessary documentation for imports and exports, complete transactions, and facilitate online fee payments. Al Jamal noted that recent enhancements to the platform have expedited customs procedures significantly.
Moreover, customs authorities have intensified collaboration with other government bodies to assure expedited entry of food supplies, adopting dedicated fast-track lanes for priority shipments and maintaining 24/7 operational hours at customs points to circumvent potential bottlenecks.
Al Jamal pointed to ongoing efforts with the Gulf Customs Union Authority aimed at enhancing trade facilitation within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). Recent meetings led to agreements designed to simplify customs processes, such as recognizing freight forwarders’ guarantees and implementing streamlined customs codes. This collaborative effort aims to reduce delays and improve the logistics of intra-Gulf trade.
In addressing potential disruptions in maritime navigation, Al Jamal illustrated Qatar’s comprehensive logistics system, which features a blend of maritime, air, and land transport options. He underscored the significance of Hamad Port as a key regional maritime hub, providing efficient access to global shipping routes. Likewise, Hamad International Airport offers superior air cargo handling capabilities, ensuring flexibility when air transport becomes necessary.
Land transport also plays a pivotal role, particularly with the strategically developed Abu Samra border crossing with Saudi Arabia, which connects Qatar to an expansive regional road network. Recent upgrades to this vital crossing include enhanced infrastructure, additional truck lanes, and advanced customs scanning systems designed to improve handling capacity and accelerate procedures.
Additionally, Al Jamal acknowledged the efficacy of the Transports Internationaux Routiers (TIR) system in streamlining overland freight movements, reducing delays through the use of unified customs documentation. Since Qatar’s accession to the TIR Convention in 2019, the integration of electronic systems has facilitated data exchange and enhanced the efficiency of import, export, and transit processes.
Regarding emergency preparedness, Al Jamal explained that Qatar’s customs authority operates under a sophisticated risk management framework, which encompasses regularly updated contingency plans activated as necessary.
