UCI Health rehires critical care workers previously laid off in March due to staffing needs and ongoing healthcare demands.

In an unexpected development, UCI Health has decided to reverse the layoffs of seven employees who were part of a broader workforce reduction impacting 150 positions last month. This move comes after a strategic restructuring initiative affecting various hospitals in Orange County. UCI Health cited the restoration of these roles as necessary due to what it referred to as an oversight in the layoff process.

The affected employees, all quality improvement healthcare specialists, play a crucial role in scrutinizing critical medical incidents within the healthcare system. The notification regarding the reinstatement was communicated by Gabe Contreras, the Human Resources Director at UCI Health, to the University and Professional and Technical Employees-Communications Workers of America (UPTE). The union’s spokesman, Ansel Herz, noted that UCI Health expressed a desire to retain these specialists as new opportunities arise from their ongoing restructuring efforts.

While the reinstatement of these seven positions is welcomed by the union, concerns remain regarding the broader context of the layoffs and the operational decisions made by UCI Health. UPTE representatives, along with members from other unions such as the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299 and the California Nurses Association, are calling into question the rationale behind the job cuts at a time when the health system is embarking on significant expansions. The California Nurses Association reported additional layoffs, including 25 registered nurses from the Fountain Valley facility, which resulted in the closure of pediatric and pediatric intensive care units.

UCI Health’s restructuring included the acquisition of four hospitals and outpatient clinics from Tenet Healthcare Corp. for 5 million, emphasizing a shift towards an expansion strategy. Despite this strategic growth, the layoffs and operational changes have raised alarms among healthcare workers and unions, prompting calls for transparency and clarity about the decision-making processes involved.

Currently, 14,200 employees are part of the UCI Health workforce, which serves a vast population of 5.6 million across portions of Orange County, western Riverside County, and southeastern Los Angeles County. As the health system continues to adapt to evolving community needs, it faces scrutiny not only regarding its staffing decisions but also concerning how best to align its services with the demands of the populations it serves.
