Local Immigrant and Refugee Affairs Office Celebrates Two-Year Anniversary by Honoring Community Contributions

Two years following its establishment, the Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs in Orange County commemorated its anniversary with an event highlighting the significant contributions of various local organizations that provide support to immigrants and refugees. The celebration took place at Newsong Church in Santa Ana and underscored the collaborative efforts of community groups, school districts, faith-based institutions, and public agencies working together to enhance the lives of local residents.

During the event, 43 community partners were recognized for their impactful collaboration and dedication to serving the immigrant population. Additionally, several awards were presented to outstanding immigrant-owned businesses, honoring their entrepreneurial spirit and contributions to the local economy. The Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs was inaugurated in 2024 by the Orange County Board of Supervisors and received a substantial financial boost of 0,000 from Supervisor Doug Chaffee’s discretionary fund to facilitate its launch.

Since its inception, the office has played a vital role in assisting over 15,000 residents by connecting them with essential services, including housing, education, healthcare, and employment opportunities. The range of organizations being honored at the anniversary included a diverse array of advocates and service providers, from legal assistance groups like the Public Law Center and Immigrant Defenders Law Center to healthcare organizations such as CalOptima Health and Latino Health Access. Community organizations like VietRISE and Access California Services also received recognition for their essential roles in uplifting immigrant communities.

Jose Serrano, the director of the office, emphasized the importance of understanding the individual narratives of immigrants and refugees, highlighting that each person possesses a unique story. His approach to service is rooted in a philosophy that prioritizes personal connections and acknowledges the complex vulnerabilities that many immigrants face. With a background in case management and refugee program administration, Serrano is dedicated to ensuring that services are tailored to the diverse needs of the community.

The event also reinforced the value of partnerships beyond government entities. Faith leaders, such as Maribel Toan from Newsong Church, spoke about the necessity of creating inclusive spaces where community members feel seen and supported. These collaborations aim to foster a sense of belonging and provide pathways to stability for individuals navigating life’s challenges in a new country.

With continued efforts, the Office of Immigrant and Refugee Affairs is poised to play a crucial role in addressing the needs of Orange County’s diverse immigrant population, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and supportive community for all residents. The ongoing collaboration between different sectors highlights the significant impact of collective action in building a stronger, more resilient society.
