Family mourns 7-month-old girl killed in Brooklyn shooting as her mother faces challenges coping with the tragedy.
In a heartbreaking scene marked by profound grief and sorrow, the family of 7-month-old Kaori Patterson-Moore laid the infant to rest on Monday following her tragic death due to a stray bullet during an apparent gang-related shooting in Brooklyn. Family members articulated the unaffordable pain experienced by Kaori’s mother, 20-year-old Lianna Moore, with her brother describing her as “breaking down all day every day.”
The incident occurred on April 1 when Kaori, who was in her stroller, was fatally struck by a bullet allegedly intended for her father, 22-year-old Jamari Patterson. At approximately 1:20 p.m., shots rang out near the intersection of Humboldt and Moore Streets in East Williamsburg, a neighborhood now engulfed in shock and outrage. Eyewitness accounts indicate that a gunman on a moped targeted Patterson, resulting in the dreadful misfire that claimed the innocent girl’s life and also grazed her 2-year-old brother.
More than 150 mourners attended Kaori’s funeral at Lawrence H. Woodward Funeral Home in Bedford-Stuyvesant, where a brass plaque reading “Our Little Angel” adorned her casket, reflecting the heart-wrenching loss of a child who was full of promise. Kaori’s godfather, Rah Jennings, expressed the collective devastation felt by the family, emphasizing that no family should ever face such a tragedy, especially involving a young child.
Reverend Al Sharpton had initially planned to give a eulogy at the Cornerstone Baptist Church service, but that arrangement was altered, leading him to make remarks at the funeral home instead, attended only by family and close friends.
The horrific aftermath of the shooting continues to reverberate through the community. Lianna Moore recounted the traumatic moment when the family was out purchasing baby supplies; she described hearing sounds reminiscent of fireworks which startled her son and prompted her to wheel Kaori into a nearby store. It is at that moment she discovered something was wrong with her baby girl.
In the wake of the tragedy, law enforcement has linked the shooting to an ongoing feud between rival gangs in the area. Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the crime: 21-year-old Amuri Greene, identified as the shooter, and 18-year-old Matthew Rodriguez, the moped driver. Following a crash soon after the shooting, Greene sustained injuries and was taken into custody, while Rodriguez was arrested days later in Pennsylvania and is slated for extradition back to New York.
As investigations continue, police report that Greene has claimed he was targeting Kaori’s father as part of a vendetta stemming from a previous altercation. Both men face multiple charges, including murder and attempted murder, as the community grapples with the senseless loss of a child whose life was just beginning.
In a poignant reflection of the situation, Kaori’s grandmother highlighted the joy and spirit of the little girl, who had recently taken her first steps and spoken her first word, “mama.” The overwhelming sorrow experienced by the family and the larger Brooklyn community calls for reflection on the consequences of escalating violence and the urgent need for collective action to ensure the safety of the city’s children.
As the community mourns the loss of Kaori Patterson-Moore, there is a collective hope that her legacy inspires change and promotes a more peaceful future for all.
