On November 19, 2023, Houthi forces made headlines by seizing the Galaxy Leader, a British-owned and Japanese-operated vehicle carrier, near the coast of Hodeidah. The operation resulted in the detention of the vessel’s 25-member crew, and the ship has since been held in custody for over a year. This act by the Houthis was described as a gesture of solidarity with Palestinians, reaffirming their intent to maintain such measures until a cessation of hostilities in Gaza is achieved.

Yemen is now divided, with the Houthis controlling the western part, including the capital, Sanaa, while the internationally recognized Yemeni government operates from the southern and eastern regions, with Aden as its capital.
The ongoing conflict has led to the displacement of over 4.5 million people, while 18.2 million require urgent humanitarian assistance. The United Nations Refugee Agency has reported that the specter of national famine looms large, with nearly five million individuals grappling with acute food insecurity. Despite these challenges, the resilient spirit of the Yemeni people remains evident, as efforts continue to address the humanitarian needs of those affected.
