Driver arrested for fatally striking 28-year-old mother in Queens with box truck.

A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday when a 49-year-old man was arrested following a fatal collision involving a box truck and a mother in Queens, New York. The victim, identified as Jenny Maribel Chacho Sanchez, was struck while crossing at the intersection of Gates Avenue and St. Nicholas Avenue around 8:25 a.m., shortly after dropping off her six-year-old daughter at school.

William Cruz, a resident of Carteret, New Jersey, now faces charges of failure to yield to a pedestrian causing injury, as well as failure to exercise due care. This misdemeanor charge, under New York law, is punishable by a fine of up to 0, a maximum of 30 days in jail, or both. Although such penalties may seem minimal, the emotional toll from the incident is considerable. According to Christian Chacho, the victim’s 28-year-old half-brother, no legal consequences can alleviate the family’s grief or bring back his sister.

Sanchez, 30, was on her way to work after completing the school drop-off when the incident occurred. Following the collision, Cruz continued driving but was apprehended by police just a block away from the scene. Investigators report that it is possible Cruz was unaware he had struck Sanchez, highlighting the often tragic nature of similar accidents.

Despite being swiftly transported to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, Sanchez succumbed to severe injuries shortly after arrival. Her family remains devastated; her brother noted the significance of her last moments with her daughter, as they cherished the impending milestone of her daughter’s quinceañera celebration.

Sanchez, originally from Ecuador, immigrated to New York City in 2012 and had dedicated several years to working at a clothing shipping warehouse in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. At the time of her death, she was living with her daughter near her father’s home, just a short distance from where the incident occurred. In a show of solidarity, friends and family have initiated a GoFundMe campaign to facilitate repatriation for Sanchez’s remains, as her parents were in Ecuador when the tragedy unfolded.

Mourners have gathered at the site of the incident, creating a memorial adorned with heartfelt tributes including candles, flowers, and photographs. The community has reacted with shock, expressing the unpredictable nature of life and loss. As her brother poignantly remarked, every outing can unexpectedly turn tragic, especially for a young woman like Sanchez. The family continues to grapple with their loss, reflecting on the fragility of life and the memories that will now serve as their only connection to a beloved sister and mother.
