Peace envoy warns of lasting divide in Gaza if current conditions persist.

The ongoing situation in Gaza, marked by a complex interplay of conflict and humanitarian need, has reached a critical juncture as international leaders urge decisive action. With calls for a renewed commitment to peace, Nickolay Mladenov, the high representative of the United States-founded Board of Peace for Gaza, stresses the urgent need to address both Israeli and Palestinian obligations to prevent a permanent crisis in the region.

The escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza has drawn renewed attention from global leaders, as the United Nations Security Council convenes to address the protracted conflict and the pressing need for a sustainable ceasefire. Nickolay Mladenov, appointed high representative overseeing the United States-founded Board of Peace for Gaza, delivered a stark warning during a recent session: the deteriorating status quo in Gaza risks becoming a permanent reality unless urgent actions are taken.

Mladenov presented a comprehensive roadmap outlining obligations for both Israel and Hamas, emphasizing that a successful ceasefire cannot rely solely on Palestinian compliance. He urged the Security Council to utilize “every means at its disposal” to encourage Hamas disarmament while reminding members of Israel’s commitment under the ceasefire established in October 2025.

Highlighting the human cost of continued conflict, Mladenov expressed that the “ongoing killings and Israeli restrictions affecting humanitarian flows are not abstract issues.” Since the initiation of hostilities following the October 7, 2023 attacks, the conflict claims have led to the deaths of over 72,775 Palestinians, with the toll continuing to rise under an intensified Israeli military operation. Just this past Thursday, a drone strike in Gaza’s al-Mahatta area resulted in further loss of life, underscoring the precarious situation.

Conflict monitors alert that hostilities have surged since the recent ceasefire agreement in the US-Israel war involving Iran, with an increase in violent incidents involving settlers and military actions in the occupied West Bank. Mladenov, a veteran Bulgarian diplomat, urged for a proactive approach from both parties to prevent the scenario where Gazans remain trapped in a cycle of despair, reliant on aid with no prospects for reconstruction.

In January, it was announced that the Gaza “ceasefire” would proceed to a second phase, focusing on Hamas’s disarmament, long-term governance, and the establishment of a panel of Palestinian technocrats to oversee post-war recovery efforts. This roadmap also calls for a gradual withdrawal of the Israeli military, which currently maintains control over more than 50% of the territory, alongside the deployment of an international stabilizing force. However, with the international community preoccupied by the ongoing conflicts in Iran amid a global energy crisis, progress towards this second phase remains stalled, leaving many in the region anxious about their future.

The imperative now lies in a coordinated effort to revive the peace process, ensuring that both Israeli and Palestinian responsibilities are met to forge a path toward lasting stability and healing in Gaza.
